SCIENCE LAB

Science class at Rifugio Austin, fondly termed “the lab” by our students, is a space for them to ask and explore questions. Through an openness to adapt lessons to their queries and interests, we demonstrate the most important lesson of science, the art of questioning and seeking answers.

This practice not only brings many fascinating topics to the table, but also grows their confidence in being creative and thinking critically. Essential curriculum finds its way naturally in this process, and is interwoven with the guide of a teacher.

In the lab, we also learn the strength of observation. Our students are always guided to note their observations. We believe this is another core element of science, and a skill which has many benefits in all aspects of life.

Our lessons are given through experiments, demonstrations, and hands-on  activities where students can see, experience, and interact with the components of a given concept. Experiments are designed to introduce new ideas or tangibly confirm discussed information. Visually presented material is used in tandem with any written and verbal explanations. Throughout Rifugio Austin, art is emphasized, and it is the same in the lab where we also use the process and creation of art as a tool to explore, explain, and interpret science material in another way.

We aim for our students to be given an encouraged curiosity of the world, inspired by an understanding that there are so many incredible things happening around and within them. Along with that understanding, they will have been supported in developing a mindset of learning, moving forward with newly acquired knowledge, and creating.
