The art show featured a series of project portfolios by students exploring the themes of self-discovery, the 50 states, and North America. The projects were the result of a two month-long investigation into these subjects, during which the students conducted research, gathered materials, made first-hand observations, and created a variety of artworks.
One project focused on self-discovery, with the student creating a series of self-portraits that reflected their view of themself and their peers. They combined each portrait with words expressing how they saw that friend and the qualities they possess. A rich discussion took place over the course of the project of the importance of self-talk, how we view ourselves, and the importance of listening to one’s own voice and trusting in it. Different mediums were used, such as paint, markers, colored pencils, watercolors, paper, and canvas. Friends also sculpted out their self-portraits.
As we continued to dive into self-exploration, students came up with the idea to explore their light and dark sides. Ms. Ari guided the project and students expressed their different sides through art, affirmations, dance, and movement. Students then filmed and created a video installation that was played on repeat during the art show.
Another project examined the diversity of the 50 states, showcasing a collection of maps and infographic cards detailing important and interesting facts about each state. Friends turned their maps into game boards and added game components to their finishing projects.
A third project explored the rich cultural heritage of North America, featuring renderings of maps that were then turned into a puzzle.
Overall, the art show presented a diverse and thought-provoking collection of student projects that celebrated the themes of self-discovery, the 50 states, and North America. It was a memorable and educational experience for all who attended.
